The curriculum involves 400 hours necessary to satisfy California State requirements. All courses are taught in English. The course of study includes extensive instruction and practical experience in manicures, pedicures, massage, customer service, personal appearance & hygiene, personal motivation & development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, as well as sanitation, California state laws & regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.

The state of California requires 400 hours of education to become a licensed manicurist; however, our institution is approved to offer a 600 hour manicuring course. Within the 200 additional hours 100 hours will be added to the CORE part of our curriculum this will ensure that you receive all the manicuring principles, technical information and professional practices. The remaining 100 hours will be added to the CREATIVE phase which is the final phase of the program that focuses on state board, challenging practical services, clinic floor, and reinforcing the core skills, making sure you are confident to pass there state board licensing test and leaving with all the job ready skills

Graduates are prepared to be entry level manicurists.

This course if taught in English. Textbooks and course materials are only offered in the English Language.

MANICURING COURSE OVERVIEW

Course Hours: 600 clock hours

The course is divided into pre-clinical instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 210 hours are devoted to classroom workshops, where students learn manicuring principles, technical information and professional practices.
  2. ADAPTIVE/CREATIVE:  The remaining 390 hours for full-time and 350 hours for part-time are spent in the clinic floor classroom where practical experience is gained. Students enrolled in the program with distance education will complete a portion of their education through online learning.

MANICURING COURSE OUTLINE

Each student’s time at Paul Mitchell The School Modesto Manicuring Program will be divided into three (3) designations:

  1. CORE:  Pre-Clinical classroom to learn the rules and prepare for the guest services. 
  2. ADAPTIVE:  Blend of classroom and clinic floor learning focused on reinforcing the core skills, while adapting to live clinic floor classroom.
  3. CREATIVE:  Final phase of nail technician classroom and clinic floor learning that prepares the future professional for licensing and salon and spa life. Students will enter a new phase of elective classroom workshops, coupled with challenging practical services that will continue to build them into confident manicurist.

The instructional program of  Paul Mitchell The School Modesto meets or exceeds the state requirements. The following subjects are taught within the brick & mortar program and the hybrid distance education program:

Health and Safety: which includes hazardous substances, chemical safety, safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases.

Disinfection and Sanitation: which includes disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments.

Manicure and Pedicure: which includes water and oil manicures, hand and arm massage, complete pedicures, foot and ankle massage, nail analysis, nail repairs, and application of artificial nails, liquid, gel, powder brush-ons, dip, nail tips, and wraps.

Paul Mitchell The School Modesto offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education-related employment that includes, but no limited to training in professionalism, resume’, development, job interview preparation and job search skills. These additional course are not a requirement for state licensure.

Exceeds means that during the course of your training you may complete more services then what is listed, however no additional hours, over the 600 required by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will be required.

Distance Education hours and assignments are graded and recorded daily. Theory chapter exams, final exams and final practical evaluations must completed in the school facility.

MANICURING PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 600-hour course:

Students must receive 85% or higher on each lesson plan theory tests. Test scores are posted the following day that the test is given. Students must receive a 85% or higher grade on all tests given.

  1. Core written and practical skills evaluation test: Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule.  All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 85% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date. The Core practical skills evaluation must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
  2. Mock State Board written exam.  The written examination covers an overview of all theory instruction, California State Law, and other items covered on the State Manicuring exam. The practical exam also covers all phases of what is to be expected on the State Board examination
  3. Distance education assessments: Students must complete a distance education written assessment and practical skill assessment . These are based on performance and must be completed on-campus each month. The distance education assessment will focus on the distance education subjects covered during that time period. Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on each distance education written assessment and each practical skill assessment. Only students enrolled in the distance education program are required to complete these assessments.
  4. Distance education assignments: The institution will respond to student's submission of lessons, projects and or evaluations the next business day.
