ESTHETICIAN COURSE DESCRIPTION

The curriculum involves 600 hours necessary to satisfy California State requirements .  All courses are taught in English. The course of study includes extensive instruction and practical experience in facials, hair removal, makeup application, customer service, personal appearance & hygiene, personal motivation & development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, as well as sanitation, California state laws & regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.

Graduates are prepared to be entry level estheticians.

This course if taught in English. Textbooks and course materials are only offered in the English Language.

ESTHETICIAN COURSE OVERVIEW

Course Hours: 600 clock hours

The course is divided into pre-clinical instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 6 weeks for full-time and 10 weeks for part-time is devoted to classroom workshops, where the student learns esthetic principles, technical information and professional practices. 
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining weeks are spent in the clinic floor classroom where practical experience is gained.
  3. Distance Education Learning Experience: Students enrolled in the program with distance education will complete a portion of their education through online learning.

ESTHETICIAN COURSE OUTLINE

  1. CORE: Core Curriculum: A six-week full-time day or ten-week part-time night orientation, known as the CORE program, instills the basic fundamentals in skin care.  Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral and practical testing methods. Students must successfully complete the Core Curriculum prior to attending regularly scheduled daily classes. 
  2. CREATIVE: Students will enter a new phase of elective classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services that will continue to build them into confident skin care therapists.

Health and Safety: which includes hazardous substances, chemical safety, safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases .

Disinfection and Sanitation: which includes disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments .

Skin Care: which includes chemical and manual facials and massaging, stimulating, exfoliating, cleansing, or beautifying the face, scalp, neck, or body by the use of hands, esthetic devices, cosmetic products, antiseptics, lotions, tonics, or creams that do not result in the ablation or destruction of the live tissue .

Hair Removal and Lash and Brow Beautification: which includes tinting and perming eyelashes and brows and applying eyelashes to any person and includes removing superfluous hair from the body of any person by use of depilatories, tweezers, sugaring, nonprescription chemicals, or waxing, or by the use of devices and appliances of any kind or description, except by the use of lasers or light waves, which are commonly known as rays .

Paul Mitchell The School Modesto offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education-related employment that includes, but no limited to training in professionalism, resume’, development, job interview preparation and job search skills. These additional course are not a requirement for state licensure.

Exceeds means that during the course of your training you may complete more services than what is listed; however, no additional hours over the 600 hours required by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will be required.

Distance Education hours and assignments are graded and recorded daily. Theory chapter exams, final exams and final practical evaluations must completed in the school facility.

ESTHETICIAN PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 600-hour course:

Students must receive 85% or higher grade point average throughout their Theory course. If a student fails to receive a 85% or higher on theory exam, the student will be given the opportunity to make up that exam.

  1. Core written and practical skills evaluation test: Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule.  All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 85% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date. The Core practical skills evaluation must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
  2. 600-hour written test. The written examination will cover a variety of State Board mock questions.
  3. Distance education assessments: Students must complete a distance education written assessment and practical skill assessment. These are based on performance and must be completed on-campus each month. The distance education assessment will focus on the distance education subjects covered during that time period. Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on each distance education written assessment and each practical skill assessment. Only students enrolled in the distance education program are required to complete these assessment
