COSMETOLOGY COURSE DESCRIPTION

The curriculum involves 1000 hours necessary to satisfy California State licensing requirements. All courses are taught in English. The course of study includes extensive instruction and practical experience in cutting, hair coloring, perming, customer service, personal appearance & hygiene, personal motivation & development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, as well as sanitation, California state laws & regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.

Graduates are prepared to be entry level cosmetologists.

This course if taught in English. Textbooks and course materials are only offered in the English Language.

COSMETOLOGY COURSE OVERVIEW

Course Hours: 1000 clock hours

The course is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 210 hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining hours are spent in the clinic floor classroom where practical experience is gained.
  3. Distance Education Learning Experience: Students enrolled in the program with distance education will complete a portion of their education through online learning.

COSMETOLOGY COURSE OUTLINE

A student’s time at Paul Mitchell The School Modesto for the cosmetology program will be divided into six designations:

  1. Core Curriculum: A 210 hour orientation, known as the CORE program, instills the basic fundamentals. Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral and practical testing methods. Students must successfully complete the Core Curriculum prior to attending regularly scheduled daily classes in cutting, coloring, and texture services.
  2. Clinic Experience: Each student’s learning process will be guided with individual attention and group learning experiences include workshops, monthly worksheets and periodic tests have been developed specifically for this monitoring process. This is when students will begin working on paying clients.
  3. Classroom Learning: Each student’s time in the classroom in this phase is divided into four areas. Each of these areas has a specialist in that field that will conduct the different elective classes once a week. These areas are cutting, coloring, perm texture, and specialty class. The specialty class includes guest artists, retail, motivation, and self-improvement, nail artistry, make-up, etc. Classroom Learning Experiences may also include retail, motivation, self improvement, professional development, and attendance education which may be conducted by an instructor, non-licensed staff member or guest artist.
  4. Adaptive Curriculum: From 210 to 500 hours students will enter a new phase of elective classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services that will continue to build them into a confident designer.
  5. Creative Curriculum: Students will spend their last 500 hours in School in “high gear” by dressing, acting and working like a true professional. They will use their own artistic and creative abilities, coupled with the assistance of the Learning Leaders, to prepare for their future beauty industry career.

Health and Safety: Including instruction on hazardous substances, chemical safety, safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases.

Board Approved Health & Safety Course (B&P 7389(a)): Including instruction on hazardous substances, basic labor laws, and physical and sexual assault awareness.

Disinfection and Sanitation: Including instruction on disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments .

Chemical Hair Services: This includes coloring, straightening, waving, bleaching, hair analysis, predisposition and strand tests, safety precautions, formula mixing, and the use of dye removers. Instruction must include services for individuals with all hair types and textures.

Hairstyling Services: This includes arranging, blow-drying, cleansing, curling, dressing, hair analysis, shampooing, waving, non-chemical straightening, and hair cutting. Instruction must include services for individuals with all hair types and textures.

Skin Care: Including instruction on chemical and manual facials and massaging, stimulating, exfoliating, cleansing, or beautifying the face, scalp, neck, or body by the use of hands, esthetic devices, cosmetic products, antiseptics, lotions, tonics, or creams that do not result in the ablation or destruction of the live tissue.

Hair Removal and Lash and Brow Beautification: Including instruction on tinting and perming eyelashes and brows and applying eyelashes to any person, and includes removing superfluous hair from the body of any person by use of depilatories, tweezers, sugaring, nonprescription chemicals, or waxing, or by the use of devices and appliances of any kind or description, except by the use of lasers or light waves, which are commonly known as rays.

Manicure and Pedicure: Including instruction on water and oil manicures, hand and arm massage, foot and ankle massage, nail analysis, and artificial nail services, including, but not limited to, acrylic, liquid and powder brush-ons, dip, tips, wraps, and repairs.

Paul Mitchell The School Modesto offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education-related employment that includes, but no limited to training in professionalism, resume’, development, job interview preparation and job search skills. These additional course are not a requirement for state licensure.

Exceeds means that during the course of your training you may complete more services then what is listed, however no additional hours, over the 1000 required by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will be required.

Distance Education hours and assignments are graded and recorded daily. Theory chapter exams, final exams and final practical evaluations must completed in the school facility

COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 1000-hour course:

Students must receive and maintain a 85% or higher grade point average throughout their Theory course. If a student fails to receive a 85% or higher on a theory exam, the student will be given an opportunity to make up that exam.

  1. Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on each assigned theory exam. Depending on the length of the distance education module, theory exams will occur weekly. The theory exams will evaluate the student’s academic performance for each subject of the distance education curriculum.
  2. Core written and practical skills evaluation test: Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 85% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date. The Core practical skills evaluation must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
  3. Final exam 1: This test covers an overview of all related cosmetology subjects (e.g., anatomy, chemistry, etc.). Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on all final exams. Final Exam 1 must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
  4. Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Future Professionals progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly basis by the Future Professional Advisor using the Course Key app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.
  5. Distance education assessments: Students must complete a distance education written assessment and practical skill assessment. These are based on performance and must be completed on-campus each month. The distance education assessment will focus on the distance education subjects covered during that time period. Students must receive a grade of 85% or higher on each distance education written assessment and each practical skill assessment. Only students enrolled in the distance education program are required to complete these assessments.
  6. Distance education assignments: The institution will respond to student's submission of lessons, projects and or evaluations the next business day.
